Library Automation

Automation is nothing but name given to an automatic system of working. The difference between automation and mechanization, a related term, is mainly one of degree. It means mechanization of Library house keeping operations predominately by computerization is known as Library Automation. Library system is very necessary and useful for users for searching dissemination, acquiring of knowledge in a minimal time.

The library has been fully computerized and all activities are being carried out by using free library management system software (E-Granthalaya) developed by National Informatics center Bangalore. The Librarian and staff have totally saved more than Rs.4 Lakhs to Management for the sake of automation with the support of Students and VKIT staff.

Librarian Mr. Vijayakumar has assisted the National Informatics center faculty for changing some models and has added new model in the E-Granthalaya for giving the effective services to users in the IT environment.

The library books/materials are bar-coded for easy access of documents and information. Therefore we have issued bar-coded library Identity card to all users. The library has introduced separate automated circulation counters using modern technology for issuing the books, back volumes, project reports, journals, CD’s in a minimal time. This may help to save the time of the reader and it is one of the 5 laws of Library i.e., “Save the time of the reader”. We are avoiding manual entries like issue / return /renewal register entries for student/staff.

About e-Granthalaya software:

E-Granthalaya, the library automation package developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC), Bangalore is aimed to suit the requirements of different classes of libraries. Which will be available on official website of NIC http://www.egranthalaya.kar.nic.in. In India there are about 56,000 Public Libraries and 400,000 School Libraries, 11,000 University/ College Libraries and 13,000 R&D Libraries in India.

These libraries can function as information facilitation centers and this integrated infrastructure can take the shape of a very good Electronic Library and Information Centre. Government of India has initiated Vidya Vahini Programme for networking schools and also a similar Programme for networking of higher education institutions through e-Granthalaya is a way forward for automation and networking of libraries.
